About
Whilst I started my academic career in International Business, I did not feel that I could explore my interests in humanity adequately. This is where anthropology came in. Currently, I consider my professional approach a delicate combination of both disciplines. This allows me to guide people and organisations through change in an ever-growing ambiguous and precarious world.
Precarity is a driver for change. If there is one thing that we have learned from businesses throughout history, it is that change is the biggest obstacle as well as the biggest advantage. In anthropology, one way in which we mark change is through a 'rite of passage'. Essentially, a rite of passage is a ceremony or ritual which occurs when individuals go from one state of being (e.g. single) to another state of being (e.g. married). During this change, there are different phases, one of which is the 'liminal' phase. We use this term to describe when participants no longer hold their pre-ritual status, but have not yet begun the transition to the status they will hold when the rite is complete. During this phase of liminality, participants 'stand at the threshold' between their previous way of structuring their identity, time, or community, and their new way.
The term 'liminality' is based on Līmen, a Latin word that signifies 'a threshold'. People and organisations tend to encounter many thresholds throughout their lifetimes. Thresholds are to be crossed—they mark the beginning of a journey to a new state of being. I consult those who wish to cross these thresholds, completing their rite of passage together.
